Wed, 13 Jul 2011 16:36:09 -0700 June Meeting addition - Vico http://supportpros.org/june-meeting-addition-vico http://supportpros.org/june-meeting-addition-vico
During the June discussion of web editing tools, we talked a bit about the basic divide between text editors and template designers. For those with a preference for the former, a new option might be Vico, a programming text editor that features vi key bindings. It includes syntax-hilighting for several web-related languages, with options to expand via bundles, and like BBEdit, has a SFTP client built-in for working with remotely-hosted files.

Vico sells on the Mac App Store for $39.99.

Wed, 29 Jun 2011 20:06:47 -0700 June Meeting - Recap http://supportpros.org/june-meeting-recap http://supportpros.org/june-meeting-recap This month the focus was on web development on the Mac, picking up from the news of the end of MobileMe site hosting and the apparent end of development for iWeb. This led to a discussion on when regular web sites are still needed in the age of Web 2.0, when many get by using a blogger service like WordpressTumblrPosterous, or even Facebook. We covered some of the promise and pitfalls of HTML5, as well as the recent launch of Google's Flash-to-HTML5 conversion utility, Swiffy.

Moving on to web development tools, we divided the options out into a few general groups - programming text editors, where code is emphasized; template-driven WYSIWYG tools, where the layout is the focus; and full-on development suites, typically only suitable for complex application projects. To varying degrees, we mentioned or demoed:

- code editors
BBEdit (and its free sibling, TextWrangler)
Coda (noted for its suite of editing modes)
Espresso (by the makers of CSSEdit)
TextMate

- template editors
Freeway (entry-level Express AS currently on sale in the Mac App Store)

- development suites
Dreamweaver (usually bought only as part of Adobe Creative Suite)

Near the end, we reviewed the features of the Develop menu in Safari for performance testing, reverse engineering, browser spoofing, etc. And we covered a few developer-oriented Safari extensions, such as BuiltWith and Coda Notes.

Thanks to all who came out!

Thu, 16 Jun 2011 15:11:13 -0700 June Meeting Preview - Web Development & Hosting http://supportpros.org/june-meeting-preview-web-development-hosting http://supportpros.org/june-meeting-preview-web-development-hosting TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) has recently run a couple of articles that are a good ramp-up to our planned discussion this month on web development options for the Mac.

First, inspired by the pending end of MobileMe's web hosting component (which does not appear to have any replacement in iCloud), they focused on web hosting alternatives (mostly free) from hacking DropBox to blog engines like WordPress/Drupal/Tumblr/Posterous and one paid host, Squarespace. The article wraps up by mentioning the template-based web editors RapidWeaver and Sandvox.

Next, they follow up with an expanded list of WYSIWYG web editors, ranging from Panic's Coda and Flux to several new to me that derive from open-source projects (Kompozer, Amaya, Seamonkey, BlueGriffon). A few HTML-oriented tools round out the list, plus the already-featured Hype.

Tue, 24 May 2011 20:13:01 -0700 Hype - HTML5 animation app http://supportpros.org/hype-html5-animation-app http://supportpros.org/hype-html5-animation-app
As a warm-up to our June topic of web design & development tools for Mac OS, we briefly looked at Hype, a new design tool for creating Flash-like sites in HTML5. Hype was written by two recent Apple emigres, and brings timeline-style animation editing (keyframing, etc.) to the web development process - like Macromedia Director did for earlier multimedia. It also creates sites compatible with iOS MobileSafari, unlike those with Flash content.

Hype's creators are showing some early examples of user projects in their online gallery.

Tue, 24 May 2011 19:58:00 -0700 May Meeting - iPhone Configuration Utility & MDMs http://supportpros.org/may-meeting-iphone-configuration-utility-mdms http://supportpros.org/may-meeting-iphone-configuration-utility-mdms

At tonight's meeting, we went through why and how to create a profile via iPhone Configuration Utility (v3.3). Specifically, we created a test profile with a Web Clip payload that links to the Supportpros.org site, and loaded it onto a device using MobileSafari (test for yourself using the mobileconfig file we created; don't worry, it's set to be removable).

The main reference we used was Apple's official iOS Developer Library article on the Config Utility.

Also discussed was creating profiles for use with Mobile Device Management (MDM) products. Apple's iPhone in Business - Integration page lists several; we looked briefly at Airwatch (a multi-device vendor who presented at this year's MacWorld Expo) and Equinux's TARMAC (which just launched specifically for managing iOS devices).

Real-time network dashboard

Rubbernet provides real-time monitoring so you can keep an eye on the exact state of your live network connections. With the Activity sidebar, you'll be able to see which applications are currently communicating over your network. When connections are idle, they will dim to let you know that traffic has stopped.

Gregory mentioned this application during April's meeting. It's a slick bandwidth monitoring application for the Mac.
